Smoking device
On
the smoking device the paper rolls are being prepared for registration
on Wiechert seismographs - the surface of the paper is covered with a
thin uniform layer of soot. The stylus of the seismograph scratches the
soot off the smoked paper with its fine tip thus recording the movement
of the Earth. In this way the friction between the tip of the pen and
the paper is minimal.
Burner frame
The flame of the butane burner grasps the paper-roll along all its width
and covers it with soot. The paper roll is stretched between two
cylinders which enables the rotating of the paper so that it doesn’t
burn out. The good soot quality is obtained by the passage of the butane
through benzene.

Fixing frame
The recorded paper-roll is stretched between two cylinders. The lower
cylinder together with the diagram part is immersed into shellac. By
rotation of the cylinder the whole diagram is dipped into shellac. After
drying the valuable trace in soot is permanently preserved.
